Fr Peter McVerry 2023

The Bruff Fitzgerald Bible Award has been awarded to many of Ireland’s leading campaigners and leading citizens in the past. This year it is our pleasure to celebrate the work of Fr Peter McVerry.

The Bruff Fitzgerald Bible Award has previously been awarded to luminary citizens such as Catherine Corless, Micheál O’Muircheartaigh, Vicky Phelan, Sr. Stanislaus etc., and symbolises the gratitude and respect felt by the people of our locality towards an individual who has made a hugely beneficial contribution to all our lives. Awarded by Bruff Heritage Group based in the Fitzgerald Heritage Centre, Bruff, this year’s award celebrates the tireless work by Fr McVerry.

In recognition of an outstanding lifetime contribution to society we are delighted to celebrate Fr McVerry. A prominent Irish homelessless activist it is our privilege to present Fr McVerry with this award. A native of Newry, Co.Down and member of the Jesuit Order he has worked in Dublin’s inner north city since the 1970’s. His experience led him to establish the Arrupe Society charity that aimed to tackle homelessness, and has since grown into the Peter McVerry Trust. The Trust is one of Ireland’s largest organisations thats is committed to reducing homelessness and the harm caused by substance misuse and social disadvantage. While its headquarters are in Dublin, it has a number of offices including one in Limerick.

In 2022, the charity worked with over 12,000 people experiencing homelessness and was active in 28 local authorities across Ireland.

Fr McVerry, the Mayor of Limerick and elected representatives will be in attendance in the Fitzgerald Centre, Bruff on Thursday December 14th at 7pm for his acceptance of the Bruff Fitzgerald Bible Award.
